Active Sports Culture

About

Active Sports Culture is about what happens around sport as well as what happens in play. We explore the rituals, words, objects, places and memories that make games meaningful to the people who take part and follow them.

What we cover

Our subjects include familiar pre-game routines, the language supporters share, the uses and histories of sporting objects, and the ways grounds become places of gathering. We follow these subjects across sports without treating one game or kind of fan as the standard.

Who it is for

The publication is for curious readers, whether they play, watch, collect, remember or are simply trying to understand why a sporting custom matters. You do not need specialist knowledge to follow the stories.

How we approach it

We aim to explain a subject clearly, distinguish observation from fact, and leave room for different experiences. A ritual may mean different things to different people; we avoid presenting one account as universal.

Our point of view

Sport is more than a result

The customs around a game can say as much as the score. We look closely at how people make sport part of their lives.
